As some of y’all are aware, I come from South Texas. You know someone is from Texas because we never shut up about it. Go figure, right? Plus, even though my skin has a nice mozzarella undertone (I’m white) I am a Hispanic male. So living in South Texas and with ties to my Mexican roots, you could safely assume I have a taste, love, and appreciation for Mexican food.
Now I live in South Korea, kind of on the other side of the world from my heritage and the food I love. Don’t get me wrong, some Korean food is great, but doesn’t exactly do it for me. Although, there are a few Mexican restaurants that exist here, they are not that great.
A lot of the Mexican restaurants here are Korean style Mexican food. I knpw what you’re probably thinking, “…but didn’t you grow up with Tex-Mex?” To those questions I say “Shut up! It’s not the same thing!” The restaurants I bravely try here seem like the chef only seen pictures of the food and decide to recreate it based off of that. Many foreigners here would agree with that as well. Things are really hit miss here.
Yesterday I stumbled upon a resturant close to where I live that served Mexican food. Normally I have to go to Seoul for the decent resturants. So I decided to try it out.
The place had a big, but kind of pricy, selection of standard Mexican restaurant food. I am always excited to try food out. I was jonesing for some tacos, so that’s what I ordered.
After waiting 20 minutes, my beef tacos came to my table. No sides, which was strange since the menu didn’t mention it was tacos only. Lot’s of cheese, but not a good blend. Plus it was greasy, just like a good taco should be. So I take my first bite, it wasn’t bad, but didn’t live up to its full potential. This struck me as odd. Turns out, they didn’t season the beef.
Seriously, like what the hell? That taco cooking 101. Always season the meat. ALWAYS!
Regardless, the resturant was pretty good overall. I may go back just because it is closer to me. I just don’t remember the name. I do remember how I got there. I am always on the look out for good Mexixan resturants in Korea. If you know of any, please let me know. I will make a post from my favorite place the next time I go there.
