In the August 2020 survey, we received responses from 1,230,576,586 websites on 261,821,287 unique domains and 10,349,486 computers with web contact. That is a loss of 3.65 million websites, but a gain of 1.16 million domains and 128,000 computers.
The number of web computers using Nginx rose by 83,000 this month, meaning that for the first time ever, Nginx is being used by more web computers than any other web server, including Apache. This is another milestone for Nginx and reflects impressive growth over the past few years.
Apache still serves more active sites than Nginx and a greater proportion of the million most trafficked sites, but these metrics have continued to decline this month. A year ago, Nginx was 6 percentage points behind Apache’s market share among the million busiest locations. nginx has halved this gap and is now less than 3 percentage points behind. If the current trend continues, it won’t be long before Nginx overtakes Apache in this area too.
In addition to a significant decrease in the total number of websites this month by 22.14 million (-15.8%), Microsoft also suffered from other metrics this month. The number of domains served by Microsoft software decreased by 8.27 million (-18.4%) and 19,000 computers with less web contact (-1.2%) are running Microsoft web servers. Microsoft also lost 633,000 active websites (-7.3%).
New vendor releases
Apache released three new versions of httpd this month. Several bugs were fixed in version 2.4.44, in version 2.4.45 support for the aborted proposal for HTTP2 cache digests was deprecated, and in version 2.4.46 three security holes were fixed.
This month nginx released updates for three of its products. nginx 19.1.2 mainline was released on August 11th with some minor tweaks and several bugfixes. On the same day njs 0.4.3 was released, which supported the querystring module. On August 13th, nginx Unit 1.19.0 was released, which introduced several new features, improved performance, and fixed a number of bugs.
