How someone uses social media (like Facebook and Twitter) really depends on their general preferences. It also depends on what the younger and older generations are trying to achieve by using platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
Yes, Facebook and Twitter are very popular, but there are other platforms that need to be considered. Other places like Instagram, Youtube, and LinkedIn are also very popular. However, some of these platforms may not be popular with every generation, says Benjamin Harow.

According to some marketing results, it is usually those aged 55 and under who use these platforms (like LinkedIn and Instagram) more often. That’s not to say that those 65 and over aren’t using these platforms, but the numbers are much lower in general. This generation prefers news content like MSNBC and other news channels.
Some of the lessons learned from history
1) History shows that more than 80% of every generation use these platforms at least once a day. Again, the number of hours will decrease dramatically as you reach 65 and older.
2) Overall, most users prefer viewing pictures over written text (except when sending some text). It’s worth noting that those 65 and over also fall into this category. There are (of course) many reasons for this.
3) Everyone, from baby boomers to GenZers, uses YouTube at least once a day, sometimes several times a day (88% and more). Nowhere on this list did they find that percent of the 65-year-olds and older (largely) use YouTube. Again, not to say that 65 year olds and older don’t use YouTube. The numbers are much lower compared to the others.
Media usage and why
In fact, these platforms were previously only associated with the younger viewers, but much of it is changing. Each generation uses these platforms, but for different reasons. A quick survey was done and this is what the marketers found.
Remember that each generation uses these platforms for different reasons. However, the following list correlates with some of the basic similarities found. Most users want to talk to friends and family (new and old). Most users want to find a community of like-minded people. Now, most would assume that it is the younger crowds who do this more often. However, you’ve found that those 65 and older are using these platforms for the same reason. Some have lost some of the friends and family members they grew up with. It’s only natural to want a friend who has something in common. Some are looking for solutions to problems to provide fresh entertainment, others want to expand their networks for business and personal use.
Again, it depends on preferences and the reason for using it. These platforms are not separate for the younger children (as many originally thought). The 65 year olds and older use it too, but some just don’t use it as much as others, according to Benjamin Harow.
