Understanding the size and aspect ratio of Instagram images
There are two important things to keep in mind when sharing photos and videos on Instagram: aspect ratio and size.
The aspect ratio refers to the width of an image in relation to its height. It is expressed as a ratio like 4: 5 or 9:16, with the first digit representing width and the second digit representing height.
It’s important to make sure your photos and videos adhere to Instagram’s aspect ratio guidelines. Otherwise, they will be tailored to a supported relationship. This can cause part of your image to be lost.
Size (or resolution) refers to the number of pixels that make up the width and height of your photo or video. Like aspect ratio, size is expressed by two numbers, the first representing width and the second representing height.
For example, an image size of 1080 x 1080 pixels is much larger than a size of 50 x 50 pixels.
When you share a photo or video on Instagram, the image displayed (both in the app and on the web) is usually much smaller than the original you uploaded.
Even if you upload a photo that is 1080 pixels wide, the image displayed on Instagram will be compressed to a smaller size.
Is image size important on Instagram at all?
It sure does! Although Instagram compresses your photos and videos, it is always better to share them at an optimal resolution. When Instagram compresses your photo, it doesn’t really affect the image quality.
Note: You should still try to avoid posting ultra-high resolution photos such as 5400 x 5400 pixels. This could actually have a negative impact on your image quality.

Instagram Size Guide # 1: Instagram Feed Posts
Instagram feed posts used to be limited to the simple square, but now (almost) anything is possible.
Square posts (1: 1)
Although Instagram supports horizontal and vertical photos, square posts are still a popular choice on Instagram – especially since the Instagram profile grid cuts content at a 1: 1 ratio.
How do you optimize for square?
We recommend making your square photos 1080 x 1080 pixels. That way, when Instagram compresses the file, the version will still be of high quality.
Horizontal posts (16: 9)
While Instagram recommends an aspect ratio of 1.91: 1, you can actually go up to 16: 9.
In any case, we recommend that you set the height of your horizontal photo to at least 1080 pixels. That way, when Instagram compresses the file, the quality should stay pretty high.
Vertical posts (4: 5)
In general, your vertical photos should have an aspect ratio of 4: 5. Anything longer (like 4: 6 or 4: 7) and Instagram will crop your content.
For the size, we recommend 1080 x 1350 pixels. This way, when Instagram compresses the photo, it should display around 480 x 600 pixels in size.
Video mail (16: 9-4: 5)
Instagram supports in-feed videos with aspect ratios from 16: 9 to 4: 5. Videos should have a frame rate of 30 frames per second and the maximum file size is 4 GB.
DID YOU KNOW: You can also use Later’s in-app editor to easily crop your photos to the perfect aspect ratio.

Instagram image size 2: Instagram carousel posts
Instagram carousel posts can be square, horizontal, or vertical – and contain both photos and videos.
However, once you’ve selected your first photo or video, any subsequent photos or videos you choose will be cropped to the same aspect ratio.
If the first photo you choose is square (as in the example above) then all of the following content will be cropped to a 1: 1 size.
Instagram Size Guide # 3: Instagram Stories
You can pretty much share anything Instagram storiesas long as it has a minimum aspect ratio of 1.91: 1 and a maximum aspect ratio of 9:16.
What’s the best size for stories?
Since most people prefer their stories to take up the entire screen (no borders), we recommend using an aspect ratio of 9:16 with a size of 1080 x 1920 pixels.

Instagram Size Guide # 4: IGTV Videos
You can now upload IGTV video with a vertical aspect ratio of 9:16 or a horizontal video with an aspect ratio of 16: 9.
For vertical videos (9:16), the ideal size is 1080 x 1920 pixels. For horizontal video (16: 9), the ideal size is 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Also note the aspect ratio of your IGTV cover picture.
The cover picture is displayed on your channel page and in the IGTV categories. So it pays to determine the right size. Instagram recommends an aspect ratio of 1: 1.55 and a size of 420 x 654 pixels.
If you plan to preview your IGTV on your Instagram feed (a great way to get more views), it’s important to consider how your cover photo will appear on both the Instagram feed (1.91: 1-4: 5 ) as well as in the Instagram profile grid (tailored to 1: 1).
To be on the safe side, it is best to leave title graphics in the center square of the cover photo, e.g. @glowrecipe does. This will ensure that your IGTV content will look just as good on your grid:
And remember that once an IGTV cover photo is published, you cannot edit it. It is therefore worth paying extra attention to this photo.

Instagram Size Guide # 5: Instagram Roles
Similar to stories Instagram roles are designed to be viewed vertically, in full screen mode, and on mobile devices.
For this reason, we recommend using an aspect ratio of 9:16. Recording and editing right on the phone is a great way to keep the optimal dimensions.
Rolls can be any length up to 30 seconds.
TIP: The video title is displayed in the lower fifth of a roll. Whenever possible, avoid important visual elements in this section.
Instagram Size Guide # 6: Instagram Live Videos
Instagram Live Videos are meant to be recorded vertically as they are meant to be sent directly from your mobile device.
This means that the aspect ratio will always be the full width and height of your screen (usually 9:16).
Since you can’t manually resize or change the aspect ratio of your Instagram Live videos, you don’t have to worry too much.
That’s it! You are now up to date on how to tweak your feed posts, stories, IGTV videos, roles, and more.
