Over the weekend, hopeful Democratic President and former Vice President Joe Biden took a “unique approach” by targeting NFL fans with an ad that first appeared in a game between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. The ad featured Joe Malcoun, co-owner of The Blind Pig, a live music nightspot in Ann Arbor, Michigan that was struggling to stay open due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The bar, which has been open for 50 years and has hosted such notable acts as Sound Garden and Nirvana in the past few years, doesn’t draw the crowds. It is now essentially an empty space that Malcoun directly accuses President Donald Trump of.
Everywhere I go people have stories of the blind pig, “Malcoun explained on the spot.” The blind pig was one of those clubs that attract artists from all genres. For 50 years the blind pig has been open and overcrowded, but right now it’s an empty space. This is the reality of Trump’s Covid response. We don’t know how long we can survive without income. Many restaurants and bars that have been the mainstays for years will fail to do this. This is Donald Trump’s economy: there is no plan and you don’t know how to go about it. It makes me so mad My only hope for my family, this company, and my community is that Joe Biden will win this election. “
What is especially notable about the Biden TV ad is that it is the first time that the pioneering hip-hop group, the Beastie Boys, allow their music to be licensed for advertising. Her song “Sabotage”, which appeared at the end of the commercial, was enough that many users on social media noticed the ad and praised it.
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) noted that while the ad appeared in a soccer game, it was likely aimed at Gen X as much as it was aimed at millennial voters. He tweeted: “This ad is a real microtargeting for a certain sub-segment of a certain generation. But damn effective!”
The sentiments were shared by actor / comedian Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt), who suggested, “Getting the Breeders, Pixies & Beastie Boys to license their music for your political promotion is a Generation X bunker buster.”
Let the game begin
However, many on social media struggled with the Biden blind pig campaign ad and suggested that President Trump shouldn’t be blamed for the music venue’s recent troubles. A common topic shared on Twitter was that while the president was calling for the country to reopen, Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer tried to keep bars and restaurants closed.
That fact almost sabotaged the message!
@russhamerboy and @sirhottest called Governor Whitmer directly, and @usshamerboy tweeted, “The blind pig is in Ann Arbor, MI. Isn’t Gretchen Whitmer the governor there? Could she have some responsibility for this venue?”
Not all of the comments were exactly polite, but many were straight to the point. Twitter user @nashvegas tweeted, “Hey, owner of ‘The Blind Pig’ on this Biden commercial. You’re an idiot. Your bar and restaurant are empty because you live in a Dem controlled city that has lockdowns and none Lets people into your bar. What an idiot. You deserve to go bankrupt with such stupid political adverts. “
Another user, @BrianADiGiovine, added, “This commercial about the blind pig who has no business and is the result of Trump’s economy is another lie !!!! It’s your governor who closed your economy! Not Trump BS advertisement !!! “
Aptly named user @ commonSense013 also questioned the ad, tweeting, “I saw a Biden commercial in which the owner of The Blind Pig bar / music venue (@BlindPigAA) @realDonaldTrump was responsible for his business problems with the virus I hope things get better for him. We need places like this. However, it’s sad that people don’t understand that the state has closed them. “
@ToeKnee_C also shared a similar response: “The Blind Pig commercial tries to blame Trump for the locks? Hate breaking it Trump has nothing to do with your bar being empty. Let me guess that you live in a Democrat run town. This ad is dishonest Gaslight, wouldn’t expect less from you @JoeBiden. “
Some users asked if Biden would be the best option to save the blind pig. @ GeneralFirebat tweeted, “Someone explains the ‘Blind Pig’ @ JoeBiden ad. What’s Joe’s plan? Open it all up and get the economy going? Hmmm … sounds vaguely familiar. Idiot.”
Perhaps the ad failed on multiple levels because some who saw it failed to understand that it was a bar in Michigan while the ad was running during a soccer game between teams in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
@MarkTepperSWP was among those who didn’t notice this fact and called on the Ohio governor for restrictions, “Wow, Blind Pig (Cleveland Bar) who blamed Trump for their lack of business. Not @GovMikeDeWine who shut them down and then only Limited capacity allowed for a 10pm curfew. Oh … and the @Browns look awful. “
Another Twitter user approached the ad from a different direction and tweeted @HTownForan, “I wonder how the idiot in that blind pig commercial is going to explain what’s going on in Europe.”
