It has never been so portable to make music great.

Thanks to TikTok, the world’s biggest social media sensation, some of the music industry’s biggest names – Drake, The Weeknd and Roddy Rich – have helped spread their songs around the world by posting 15 to 60-second clips for the Offering service. But this year’s real winners were the names you had never heard of.

Take SAINt JHN, who got his first # 1 song on the Billboard Hot Dance / Electric Songs chart in April after releasing a dance remix of his 2016 single “Roses” or Canadian hip-hop musician Powfu , who then signed with Columbia Records worldwide appeal for his dreamy Beabadoobee-sampled song “Death Bed”.

According to data collection website Tokboard, both artists landed in TikTok’s top 10 songs of the month in 2020 when videos of their music got billions of views on the app. It’s a coveted achievement that in both cases resulted in a surprising slump in paid streams on other services.

Labels, musicians, and music streamers have included TikTok with licensing agreements, curated playlists that track virality, and in Drake’s case, choreographed dance moves to accompany new song releases.

“[Musicians] They don’t make any money licensing TikTok, and that’s not really their end goal, ”says Eunice Shin, principal partner for direct clients at the Prophet consulting firm. “It’s what happens outside the platform.”

What, in that case, could be used in an ad campaign – like the Dunkin ‘Donuts commercial with “Death Bed” and TikTok’s TV commercial that featured the most exciting viral success story: Legacy Act Fleetwood Mac’s resurrected hit “Dreams”. TikTok trends could also ensure the use of a song in a movie or TV show, or, more often, the rush to stream the music on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, or any of the other services that pay rightholders a dime every time a Song received played.

“We’re not particularly interested in creating virality,” said Andy McGrath, senior vice president of legacy recording at Sony Music, who worked with Break My Stride star Matthew Wilder to join the app after being The hit from the 1980s had sparked a text message prank trend. “It’s more about capitalizing on it and doing whatever it takes to support the things that the developers at TikTok are already doing.”

Here’s a look at the 10 songs taken from TikTok Trends streamed the most on Spotify in 2020, and the value of those listeners, based on a conservative industry average of $ 0.003 per stream.

Most of these also happen to be the top songs streamed overall on Spotify this year, and half of them were the basis for the first appearances on the Billboard Hot 100. All of them have Drake’s “Toosie Slide” and Justin Bieber’s comeback single ” Delicious ”, so the weekly global stream data from Spotify.
