Big T’s Top 5 Generation 1 (Kanto) Pokemon

With the new Pokemon games coming out in roughly two months (November 15th, 2019), I decided to do a post of my favorite Pokemon from each generation. These are my personal bias so don’t get hurt if your favorite is not on here. Also don’t be mad that this is a rate top 5 list that doesn’t have the overrated Charizard.

#5: Butterfree

That’s right, the mother fucking butterfly. I’ve been playing Pokemon since Red and Blue hit the US (God I am old) and this one has a special place in my heart. No, not because of the Bye Bye Butterfree episode of the Pokemon anime. Although there is a funny story I have about that episode that I should share later.

I love this butterfly because it was a beast for the first half of my first play through. As you may or may not know, psychic type attacks were over powered in the first two games due to balancing issues. Butterfree learns the psychic type attack confusion upon evolving from Metapod at level 10. So I cheesed though just spamming confusion. Take that Brock!

I still love you Brock.

#4: Porygon

Porygon, or Polygon (due to the l-r sound the Japanese language has) is another one that has a special place in my heart. This Pokemon was done dirty by Pikachu in the anime (look it up, Google can tell you better than I can) and was the first thing to teach me the value of hard work.

In Red and Blue this Pokemon can only be bought from the game corner. It cost a whopping 9,999 coins in Red (half this is blue -.- I later learned). I am the world’s unluckiest person, so I couldn’t earn the coins in a natural way. Instead, I hard to buy them like the chump I was. So every time I had money I would go and buy coins. I had to fight the Elite Four many times to earn money. The rate was 1,000 Pokemon Dollars to 50 coins. Yes it was a trek.

Also, it is the only real Pokemon. According to the Pokedex and lore, Porygon is a man made Pokemon that lives in cyberspace. In essence it is basically code. Think about it.

#3: Zapdos

#Team Instinct

I just love it. It was the first legendary I ever caught. It is spiky, cause you know I was edgy even as a kid, and just looks cool. It was my main battler for Lorelie of the Elite Four. Drill Peck and Thunder what more do I need? I was lucky almost all of her Pokemon were part water despite being an ice type.

Don’t judge me. I don’t have deep reasons for liking the ones I do. Zapdos is also part of the reason I chose Team Instinct in Pokemon Go (beside hating myself and loving a challenge).

#2: Gyarados

It’s hard finding a horizontal picture.

Another Pokemon I thought looked cool. Another Pokemon that taught me the value of patience and hard work.

In Mt. Moon, well outside it, a random guy will sell you a Magikarp for 500 Pokemon Dollars in the Pokemon center. Me playing the first time ever, thought it was a great deal and bought it (and I still buy it to this day). It has no attack moves until level 15 where it gets tackle. Geeze. And since it was a first generation Pokemon game, there was no experience shares this early in the game, so you had to put it in front of your party and rotate it out to get some experience. In a hardcore way, I grinded in Mt. Moon until it evolved. I am just glad it wasn’t a late stage Pokemon. Misty didn’t know what hit her. She did. It was me.

#1: Seadra

My top pick. You are probably wondering why I pick the seahorse. Well it is simple. I fished it up on my first play through. I thought it was cool looking and taught it surf. Seadra + surf = victory in Elite Four.

Yes, I surfed my way to victory in my first play through with the Pokemon. Just because of that, it will forever be my favorite generation 1 pokemon.

What do you think of my top 5 pick? Who are your favorite, non-Charizard Pokemon?

Look forward to next week where I post my Top 5 generation 2 Pokemon.

P.S. I actually don’t know if I will get the new games for the Switch or not yet.
